Afghans weigh in on troop increase

KABUL — As President Barack Obama outlined plans for a troop increase that raised the ghosts of Vietnam and the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, many here streamed to morning prayer seemingly indifferent to what might be his most fateful wartime decision.

No one gathered around television sets before dawn today. Still, there was plenty of talk about Obama’s troop surge, which is expected to see some Marines leaving for the war zone before Christmas Day and perhaps engaging in bitter fighting soon afterward.
