MRE urges Gates to ensure public access to Hasan proceedings

Military Reporters and Editors, along with several other associations and media firms today have asked Defense Secretary Robert Gates to ensure the media has public access to all proceedings and documents in an Article 32 hearing of Maj. Nidal M. Hasan.

Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, was charged with killing 13 people in the Nov. 5 rampage at Fort Hood in Texas.

On Dec. 2, an additional 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder, with the victims specified as 30 soldiers and two civilian police officers, were filed, the Army said in a statement.

“We write to you today to emphasize the importance of the public’s ability to observe all all aspects of the Article 32 and any other subsequent court martial or other military proceedings against Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan …” the letter stated.
