Last year was the worst for suicides among active-duty soldiers since the Army began tracking those deaths in 1980. But the final tally was sobering for reasons beyond the numbers.

Top Army officials said Friday that 160 soldiers had killed themselves at home and in the war zone. They also said they still had no clear idea why the death toll has spiraled from 140 in 2008, despite launching a major collaborative study that aims to decipher what’s now a troubling mystery.
