This morning is tonight in Afghanistan, and somewhere outside the town of Marjah, a band of soldiers and Marines is dug in, sometimes coming under fire from entrenched insurgents firing mortars and rocket-propelled grenades, occasionally snatching sleep in below-freezing temperatures while dwelling on the fight to come.

A small band of war correspondents is out there with them. They’re going to march with our troops into that town, the paths leading into it sown with mines and the Taliban waiting, using the impoverished people they have trapped in Marjah as human shields.
