Times Reporter held by Taliban is among Polk Award winners

A correspondent held captive by the Taliban for more than seven months and journalists who exposed inhumane treatment of inmates in a “supermax” prison and criminality in a state child-care program were among the winners of 13 George Polk Awards for 2009 announced Monday by Long Island University.

MRE_150Two New York Times staff members and reporters for Bloomberg News; The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel; The Belleville News-Democrat, in Illinois; USA Today; and Stars and Stripes were honored for work in the tradition of George W. Polk, a CBS correspondent killed covering the civil war in Greece in 1948.
