NPR is launching a new Web-only project, in cooperation with member-stations. KPBS is seeking a journalist-blogger who is a first-rate writer and communicator for our site focused on military issues in San Diego. The journalist-blogger will be charged with building a dedicated online following around coverage of military issues, serving as the area’s most authoritative voice on the issue, with a strong local profile and a national reach through NPR and the wider public broadcasting system. Position produces several posts daily for new blog built around issues related to the military; writes about the day’s news and curates related materials from elsewhere online in an informal, conversational style that also comports with KPBS’ on-air voice; solicits and edits contributions from others at KPBS and elsewhere including show hosts, correspondents, producers, editors, subject experts and military leaders; consistently and enthusiastically engages with readers and the KPBS community in comment threads and other social media community venues; provides ongoing insight and counsel to other KPBS shows and departments about their online and digital projects and ambitions; maintains daily liaison with editors about developing stories, coordinating the blog with the rest of the site; ensures that all materials produced for the site meet KPBS program standards and practices, including standards of accuracy, fairness, objectivity and balance; performs other duties as assigned. Position located in San Diego, CA.
Requirements: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent. Three years full-time professional, progressively responsible work experience in journalism. Excellence in analysis and interpretation. Demonstrated excellence in reporting and writing for the Web and for blogs. Demonstrated excellence in news judgment. Demonstrated expertise in all aspects of online journalism, reporting, writing, editing, photography, Web publishing tools and social media. Ability to aggressively set a coverage and style agenda. Ability to solicit and edit work from other contributors to the blog. Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing priorities/conditions. Demonstrated understanding of social media concepts including the ability to use social media to further reporting and build networks of influentials, and expertise in blogging best practices. Ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure, including the ability to report breaking stories. Ability and willingness to work varied shifts. Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at KPBS and within the public broadcasting system. Candidates should have subject-matter expertise and a solid journalistic track record befitting KPBS’ reputation as a trusted local news source. Requires a demonstrated ability to cultivate sources, identify important trends in the military and collect and verify information through a variety of online and offline channels. Candidates should be conversant with blogging and social media applications and a variety of multimedia tools. Should have knowledge of the mechanics of standard English grammar, spelling and AP style. Should display knowledge and adherence to high ethical standards. The strongest candidates also will have proven experience developing a successful niche news site, building audience, establishing a social media brand and stoking community engagement.
