'm a reporter with The Star Tribune in Minnesota. I am scheduled to begin an embed in Afghanistan on Nov. 16 with the Minnesota National Guard and this week was told the newspaper would not be covering long term disability benefits. This is a departure from previous embeds. I was told the company's insurer was adamant about not ensuring for long term disability no matter what premium was offered.

As a former McClatchy newspaper, I was covered under McClatchy's self-insurance.

With a week to go, the tickets are paid for, the visa is obtained, the schedule in Afghanistan is set.

Do any members have any advice about what other newspapers are doing these days about coverage during embeds? I am told the newspaper was able to obtain a rider providing workers compensation coverage during the time in a war zone.

Any help would be appreciated as soon as possible.
