BRAC 2005
MRE's BRAC kit
Get a head start on the "mother of all BRACs"
As someone covering the U.S. military, you've heard about BRAC - base realignment and closure. It's the nightmare of local politicians, the bain of the chamber of commerce and the source of workplace stress for civilian DOD workers.
BRAC 2005 has arrived. Later this month, President Bush will officially nominate nine prospective commissioners to the BRAC commission. In May, the Secretary of Defense will release his recommendations for closing and realigning domestic military installations. That's when the fun (and long hours) begin.
Before the list comes out, reporters should be ready for BRAC and MRE is helping out it's members with the MRE BRAC Kit - available online only to our members.
Check out the BRAC 2005 navigation bar on the left side of this screen. Click on a tab and you'll be whisked to useful information and further links to BRAC information that should assist you in researching the process, developing story ideas, locating background information and determining how your area's bases fared in prior BRACs.
It's a work in progress and we'll be adding further information and links in the future. Please send us your ideas, links to your BRAC stories, new information and useful sources. We'll add those to the mix in hopes it will assist our members in providing comprehensive coverage of the largest military base realignment since the end of World War II. Send them to webmaster Jim Crawley or board member Ed Offley, who developed the BRAC Kit.
Also, MRE officials are planning an early June BRAC conference in Washington for reporters and editors to learn more about base closings and how to cover the story. More details will be coming as plans solidify.
