“Military Reporters & Editors strongly condemns the Jan. 20, 2016 Taliban attack that killed seven journalists working for a private Afghan television station. The suicide bombing also injured at least 25 others, including some women.
“Many of our members have worked with foreign journalists in Afghanistan, and we have great respect for their work and the difficulties they face in covering the news in that war-torn country. As the United States draws down its forces from Afghanistan, there are fewer opportunities for our members to cover the news there, thus it becomes the responsibility of local news organizations to educate their own citizens as well as the American people about what’s happening in the region.
“Our thoughts are with the victims and we send our deepest condolences to their families. We also stand firmly behind the journalists who continue to risk their lives to report the truth,” said MRE President Amy McCullough.
